From 1937 until the 1960s, Attorney Walter L. Gordon, Jr. collected photographs of the legal and social life of the African American community. His late wife, Clara, played a major role in preserving the almost eight hundred photographic collection over the years. In October, 2002, the entire collection was given to William C. Beverly, who placed them on loan to Eighth & Wall for its projects and on deposit at USC's Doheny Library where an exhibition was held including two panel programs, one academic and the other including the community.

In July 2010, the collection was donated to UCLA where it is currently being catalogued, restored and preserved. It has proven to be one of the most renowned photographic collections. This page is a minute example of its contents.
